Bosco brand cheese stuffed breadsticks have mozzarella cheese
inside and are topped with butter and Parmesan cheese. They are often served
with marinara sauce. Although store-bought mozzarella cheese stuffed
breadsticks are delicious, homemade ones taste even better. Best of all, they
are easy to make. If you don't want to go to the trouble of making your own bread
dough from scratch, you can easily replace it with pizza dough.

Make plain cheese-filled breadsticks Bosco style
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 220 ºC (425 ºF). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. This will make it easier to remove the sticks.
Step 2
Knead 450 g (1 lb) of pizza dough on a floured surface. Cut a
910 g (2 lb) batch of pizza dough in half. Then put one of the halves to one
side and the other half on a lightly floured surface.
- Cover the other half of the pizza dough with a clean liner to keep it from drying out.
- You can use store-bought or homemade pizza dough.
Step 3
Roll out the dough into a 20 x 40 cm (8 x 16 inch) rectangle. Make
the dough about 1/4 inch (6 mm) thick. If necessary, you can make a slightly
longer rectangle. [4] The rectangle must not be too thick.
- The rectangle cannot be thicker than 1/4 inch (6 mm). The dough will rise and be thicker.
- If it shrinks when you roll it out, let it rest on the counter for 10 minutes, then use it again.
Step 4
Cut the dough into 2 x 8 inch (5 x 20 cm) strips. Cut the strips
widthwise. This will give you 8 strips 8 inches (20 cm) high. For this purpose,
use a pizza cutter or a non-serrated knife.
Step 5
Line the center of each strip with mozzarella cheese sticks.
Most of them weigh about 30 g (1 oz.). If they are larger, you can cut or tear
them in half lengthwise.
- Do not use whole milk mozzarella cheese. Its moisture content is higher, so it will not hold its shape well when you bake it. It will become sticky.
Step 6
Fold the strips in half, then pinch the edges to seal them. Be
sure to fold the strips in half lengthwise so they can be made into 3 x 20 (1 x
8 inch) strips. Pinch the raw edges (not the folded edges) to seal the dough.
- Roll out each breadstick along a lightly floured surface. That will even them out.
Step 7
Place the cheese-filled breadsticks on a baking sheet and wait 30
minutes for them to rise. During that time, you should roll out the remaining
450 grams (1 pound) of dough. Then cut it into strips and add mozzarella. By
the time you're done, the first batch will have finished rising.
- The Bosco-style sticks will expand almost twice their size, so leave about 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4 inches) between each one.
Step 8
Brush olive oil over the cheese-filled breadsticks using a
kitchen brush. Pour olive oil onto a small plate, then dip a kitchen brush into
it. Run the brush along the top of each breadstick, reloading the brush each
time it starts to dry.
- Only do this with the Bosco-style cheese-filled breadsticks that have finished rising. If the second batch has not finished rising, wait a little longer.
Step 9
Sprinkle the Bosco-style cheese-stuffed breadsticks with garlic
powder, oregano and salt. Take a jar of garlic powder and shake it over the
breadsticks. Do the same with the oregano and salt. For more flavor, add a
little Parmesan cheese on top of each breadstick.
- The amount you use of each ingredient doesn't matter much, do it by eye.
- Distribute the ingredients as evenly as possible.
Step 10
Place them in the oven and set the temperature to 180 ºC (350
ºF). Do not reduce the temperature before placing the breadsticks inside the
oven. The temperature should gradually drop from 220 ºC (425 ºF) to 180 ºC (350
°F) while the breadsticks are in the oven.
- If you have a large enough oven, you may need to place the two trays side by side. If the oven is not large enough, save the second batch for later.
- Do not place the second baking sheet on a higher or lower rack. They will not bake evenly.
Step 11
Bake the Bosco-style cheese-filled breadsticks in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes. Set the timer as soon as you reduce the temperature. Do not wait until it reaches 180 ºC (350 Fº). The Bosco-style stuffed cheese sticks will be ready when they become fluffy and golden brown.
- .Repeat this process with the second batch. Remember to raise the temperature to 220 ºC (425 ºF) and then bring it down to 180 ºC (350 ºF).
Step 12
Wait 5 minutes for the Bosco-style cheese-filled breadsticks to cool before serving. Do not transfer to a cooling rack. Let them cool on the baking sheet. Once the sticks are cool enough to hold in your hands, transfer them to a plate or serving basket.
- Serve with tomato sauce.
- Serve with warm tomato sauce or pizza sauce.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator. Consume the sticks within 3 days.
- If desired, reheat in the microwave for 30 seconds.
